Japan Explosion-Proof Certification (JPEx)

Ex Certification for Japan (JPEx)

DEKRA is officially registered as a Foreign Registered Type Certification Body under Japan’s Industrial Safety and Health Act. Since January 23, 2018, we have been authorized to issue Japan’s explosion-proof certification (JPEx), enabling manufacturers and importers to legally market their products in Japan’s hazardous environments.

Legal Requirements in Japan

In Japan, equipment used in hazardous areas such as Group II petroleum and chemical plants must comply with standards or safety devices specified by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.
Even if a product is certified abroad, it must obtain JPEx certification to be legally sold, leased, or installed in Japan.
Failure to comply may result in legal penalties.

Regulatory Updates

Japan revised its explosion-proof regulations on August 24, 2010, with full implementation starting February 23, 2011.
These updates brought Japanese standards closer to IEC (EN) norms, making it easier for internationally certified products to obtain JPEx.
